The instinct is to ask AI to write the plan. That skips the critical step: structuring the thinking. AI applied at the end simply inherits every upstream flaw and presents it more cleanly.
Where planning breaks down
Planning failures are remarkably consistent. They usually come from vague objectives, undefined decision boundaries, incomplete stakeholder identification, and method selection by habit. Those are thinking failures, not tooling failures.
Using AI where it actually helps
Clarify objectives. Use AI to test specificity, surface contradictions, and expose vague language before it becomes structural.
Identify stakeholders. AI can surface likely groups, highlight gaps, and prompt consideration of the people who are easiest to miss.
Align methods to purpose. It should be able to challenge default choices and flag misalignment between intent and method, including aligning engagement methods to levels of participation as defined by the IAP2 Spectrum.
Structure the process. AI is useful when it validates sequencing, checks whether activities connect logically, and tests timelines against the level of influence being promised.
Prepare for synthesis and reporting. Planning how input will be analysed and reported early reduces downstream friction and improves coherence later.
Where tools fall short
Most tools still treat AI as a drafting layer. They accept a brief and return a document. They do not improve the thinking that produced the brief.
A sharper insight
A well-generated plan can make weak thinking harder to detect, not easier. That is why AI belongs at the start of planning, not the end.
The takeaway
AI does not fix poor planning. Used properly, it sharpens objectives, reduces blind spots, and strengthens design. The value is not in what it produces. It is in where it is applied.
